So I really liked the idea of "Friends turned enemies" as far as the Kree go, and out of some other rivalries in fandom in the MCU (IE SHIELD vs HYDRA) Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden really illustrated that the Kree have their own class and structure and Yon-Rogg may have been a bad guy - but like Zangief they didn't make him a bad guy. Consequently, for those threading with him, I'm gonna give a basic primer about just what to expect from threading with Yon (I also have another secret Kree journal who'll be jumping around once the movie's been out for a month.)

WHO ARE THE KREE
Movie Kree
Comic Kree

Mostly they're a big race of blue and pink assholes. The different skin color is important. We'll get to that however.

Class and Society: Comics wise we basically see lots of Mar-Vell, Mar-Vell's descendants, but day-to-day life is a mystery. Since they're based on actual imperial societies (and since Jude Law spoke with particular annoyance when asked to find something good about the Kree in regards to them colonizing planets) they're essentially England with some hard core "pure genome/better then you/sparta" style breeding habits. They come in two different shades, Pink and Blue. We're gonna pretend the Ruul don't exist cause nobody got time for that.

Why is Jude Law not blue SO. The majority of the Kree we've seen so far - are blue. The rest of them are in surprisingly earth colors. This has to do with Kree evolution. Once upon a time there was this Kree who tried to make his people into a powerful group by stealing a magic crystal (yes really). It stagnated the Kree's evolution so for millennia they were stuck as big blue people. Eventually the Kree, and the supreme intelligence, attempted to reverse this by exposing the population to a bomb called a nega-bomb.

Yes, you heard that correctly. Their solution was to bomb their own people and see what it would do.

What this resulted in was a jump in evolution, the "pink-skinned" kree. Much like real life, when major shifts in population occur people make changes to oppress the newer larger class. The pink skinned kree are a far more numerous sub-group and also, in the comics at least, forbidden from holding certain jobs. They also can't hold public office and are generally treated as "less" then the blue skinned Kree.

This is supported in Agents of SHIELD canon as well as the MCU: the reapers encountered in AOS season 3 were blue because they were from an earlier generation of Kree (who were actually wiped out by the Kree at the order of the supreme intelligence to try and erase the 'inhuman' experiment.) The Kree encountered in season 5 were rich. It's mentioned that Kaius is a part of the "upper echelon" of Kree society and his family is - to be frank - rich.

Yon and Korath are both normal skinned because they're of a lesser class and forbidden from certain privileges. This makes Yon-Rogg more likely to sympathize with Carol (and also probably helped a certain second Kree.) especially as he got to know her.

Does this excuse the Kree? Hell to the no, but history has a sad legacy of people who could probably join with oppressed classes and make real change. Those people decide to try and leap for the upper echelons of society anyway. Good luck with that Yon, Ronan doesn't seem like the kind of guy to let this happen.

What does this mean? It means that Korath probably has a difference in ideaology then Yon-Rogg, simply because Yon doesn't want to involve the accusers several times. The notion of them playing with this dichotemy is fascinating. I'm super intrigued to see where Yon-Rogg will go in CM 2. Especially when you consider that by the time GOTG vol 1 rolls around, there is no supreme intelligence. There's an emperor.

So now that we're out of the nasty empire dynamics, let's talk about why Captain Marvel is the gayest movie since Thor: Ragnarok. Everybody in the Movie is Queer

In the comics, the Kree believe that the best way to know someone is to have sex with them. Yes, you read that correctly. Hence the "Have sex with my clone" line. While their whole attitude is very Sparta their attitude canonically towards love - is a lot like Athens, Thebes, and other Greek City states.

The Sacred Band of Thebes, a separate military unit reserved only for men and their beloved, is usually considered the prime example of how the ancient Greeks used love between soldiers in a troop to boost their fighting spirit. The Thebans attributed to the Sacred Band the power of Thebes for the generation before its fall to Philip II of Macedon, who was so impressed with their bravery during battle, he erected a monument that still stands today on their gravesite.

The Kree in the comics are pretty loose, super bisexual, and consequently have probably all slept together in an effort to boost morale. Consequently Yon-Rogg has slept with his team individually and is pretty sexually fluid. If he needs to get to know you, he might offer to sleep with you, Man, Woman, whatever.

(pretty common for imperialist states and conquerors come to think of it. Hm.)

Is it Love. No. The Kree don't believe in love and their sense of breeding is essentially all about mating to preserve themselves. (sigh.) so while Kree are encouraged to experiment, when it comes time to get marriage. If they love people it's their family members.

I'm A Carol Player What Does This Mean For Me? Jude Law has said their relationship was platonic. Which, thank GOD because this could have easily been a "Kreep" who was basically bemoaning possessing Carol and wanting her to be only his. That made their fight more relevant since while maybe there was some attraction but it was passing. (More on this later.)

Given Kree habits in the comics I usually tend to play I'd assume he offered. Feel free to say yes or no to that happening if we thread.

One of my FAVORITE comic book series is Saladin Ahmed's Black Bolt. If you haven't read it, you should to get an idea of Inhumans and just what they're about. It's an incredible book, there's Ra'va the best Skrull EVER, and it's just generally great.

ANYWAY. Let's talk Kree, Blood, and why Yon-Rogg probably thought of Carol as his younger sister-who-he-never-had.

Agents of SHIELD Season 3 So SHIELD season 3 saw the return of the Kree. We know Kree blood has pretty incredible properties in the MCU (Brought back Coulson, etc. etc.) but season 3 saw that it's a key component of making inhumans, and Captain Marvel confirmed it's a part of making people Kree.

Why? Centuries of carefully cultivated breeding and a giant evil robot brain that encourages people to only think of themselves growing the worst traits of themselves with them lacking the acuity to stop it.

HONESTLY I tend to play their weird blood thing as a Kree rite that's not undertaken lightly. Their obsession with genetics (sigh.) means that it's a big deal when one decides to give them a blood transfusion. As squad leader that's probably Why Yon decided to be the one to give Carol a blood transfusion and he took that responsibility personally.

There's two ways this can be interpreted. Caring. (unlikely), or "I've absorbed energy and I'm Carol Danvers and I'm becoming unstable." "Oh shit I will save you."

I opt for the latter and then, the Kree ended up brainwashing her to think that this was business as usual. Does Yon understand that it's brainwashing and shouldn't have been done? Yes. Rather then seeing it out of a means for power for himself however, he saw it as a means to advance the species and honor her for surviving because it stabilized her. Which meant - she could be incredibly powerful.

Superpowers happen a lot for Kree and aliens.

(but he's not a sexual dick and I'm not willing to play him as a possessive Grant!Ward esque dick. Cause he's canonically not.)

In short, while she's alive suddenly he feels an obligation to take care of her and begins to see her as a sibling. He had a brother (that's canon) and his father (that's canon.)
